AVID targets students
who have the potential to
succeed in a rigorous academic program.
The AVID Student
AVID targets students in the academic middle - B, C, and even D students - who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college, and many are from low-income or minority families. AVID pulls these students out of their unchallenging courses and puts them on the college track: acceleration instead of remediation.
Selection criteria include:
- Ability: Students that are getting Cs and Bs but are capable of more and students that can succeed in college preparatory courses with support.
- Desire and Determination: Students that want to attend college and are willing to work hard to get there.
- Membership in an underserved group: Students that are from a family of low-income; first in the family to attend college; and from populations that are historically under represented in college.
Applications will be found at the bottom of this page later this year when the application process begins. Dates for the application process will be announced on this page after winter break.
