Tutor Program Overview:
AVID is a national program. Its mission is to assist students who are in the academic middle to prepare theme for admission to a four year college or university. The mission is accomplished by encouraging students to enroll in a "rigorous" course in high school, such as Pre-AP; AP or IB as well as an AVID Elective course.
The AVID Tutor
Tutors are essential to the success of the AVID elective class, where they facilitate student access to rigorous curriculum. As students from colleges and universities, tutors receive formal training and also serve as role models. AVID students who continue their education in college often return to the program as tutors.
To support students in their learning process, tutors are provided for the AVID students to provide assistance, role models and to help them attain their college aspirations.
Tutor Requirements:
- Must be or have a high school diploma with a 2.5 GPA or higher
- Clear criminal background check
- Preference for current college students
Tutor Responsibilities:
- Work with students on assigned days in small groups using AVID strategies
- Set an example of personal academic excellence and high expectations
- Communicate with teaching staff
- Attend 18 hours of AVID training. 8 hours before the school year and an additional 8 hours during the school year.
