- Any student enrolled in grades
K-12 may be considered for homebound instruction if it appears that
the student will be absent from school for fifteen (15) days or
more due to physical illness, mental health treatment, or pregnancy.
In the case of mental health treatment, a mental health professional
may sign the Physicians Approval form requesting homebound
service.
- In medical situations, the school
nurse sends (by mail or fax) a Physicians Approval form to
the students doctor to confirm the need for homebound instruction.
Permission given verbally over the telephone must be followed by
a signed statement.
- The Student Services Office contacts
the parents by mail and phone to initiate homebound services. A
parent or responsible adult must be in the home during homebound
instruction.
- The assigned homebound teacher will
contact the school to get assignments and books for the student.
- School credit for promotion or graduation
is given on the basis of 60 minutes of homebound instruction to
be considered equivalent to one day of attendance in the regular
school program. For purposes of State reimbursement, the combination
of days in regular attendance and the hours of home and hospital
instruction should not exceed the total number of student days which
is 172 for elementary and 173 for secondary.
- If a parent refuses to allow a district to provide homebound instruction to a student who is under age 16, the Compulsory Attendance Law and home school issues become relevant. However, students age 16 and older are not within the compulsory attendance age and are not required to attend school. Students age 16 and older who do not participate in homebound instruction are required to follow the district's withdrawal procedures. Contact your school counselor for information.
